Instructor: Karan Lee

ABOUT KARAN

As a NYC Public School teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) for 6 years, Karan Lee discovered her love of Pilates after suffering a running injury. She tirelessly sought many different types of Pilates, from classical to contemporary styles, to understand how to heal herself and how to help others. She trained in both Pilates mat and apparatus at the Kane School in New York City.

As a Pilates instructor for several years, she has taught private sessions at Equinox, and also headed a mat Pilates program for teens at the High School of Hospitality Management, where she taught ESL and English Regents Prep for four years.

During the summer of 2015, she attended the Functional Anatomy for Movement Injuries (FAMI) Workshop at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, to deepen her understanding of the anatomy.

Karan enjoys the movement experience of Pilates and believes that it is a window to understanding how we live and move in space. She created PSL Pilates because she believes that Pilates is not just exercise but education. The collaboration between the teacher and student leads to a synthesis of new knowledge. She lives for those "aha moments" which lead to greater understanding of healthy movement and dysfunctional patterns.

She has taught Pilates students from ages 9 to 90. Karan has experience working with people who have neck and back pain, herniated discs, scoliosis, stenosis, shoulder, knee, and hip dysfunction, osteoporosis, osteopenia, and many other conditions. She also works with prenatal and postnatal women, as well as dancers and athletes.

Karan is also a writer and composer. She studies part-time at Brooklyn College, where she is pursuing another undergraduate degree in Musical Composition.
